How to Change Spark Plugs?

Like any other mechanical parts, spark plugs also wear out. Spark plugs are responsible for supplying electricity from your ignition to the engine. This would ensure a smooth start every time you crank your car. Spark plugs fire constantly and gradually wear down over driving time, reducing efficiency. If you are struggling to start your car even after turning the key in the ignition, it might be the time to replace your car’s spark plugs. Replacing worn spark plugs can greatly improve the car engine’s efficiency and performance, and replacing the spark plugs does not require any special tools or expertise, and you can easily do it at home with basic hand tools.

Make sure the engine is cool before you get started

3. Safety First

Park your car on a flat surface and ensure the engine is cool.

Ensure that the positive and negative terminals do not cross with a foreign object and cause any dangerous short circuit.

4. Disconnect the negative battery terminal

5. Disconnect the wires

Carefully inspect the plugs & ensure that there is no debris or water around them.

6. Remove the spark plug boot

Grasp the boot and carefully pull it out

7. Unscrew the old spark plug

Remove spark plugs one at a time and inspect for any damage

8. Install new spark plugs

Check whether the replacement plug is of the same size as the old plug

Screw the plug by hand, and twist it clockwise until it stays in place.

Use a torque wrench to finish screwing until its moderately tight

Do not over-screw the plug

9. Replace the plug wire

Add little dielectric grease inside of the boot.

Put the spark plug wire boot back on the spark plug.
