Mechanical fuel pumps were the standard in vehicles with carburetted engines. However, when fuel injection became common and higher fuel pressures were required, electrical fuel pumps became the norm. Some still prefer mechanical fuel pumps because of their ease of installation. They don’t require extra wiring, so there is no risk of electrical issues, and they are extremely reliable. Mechanical pumps are also quiet and shut off when the engine shuts off. Airtex Fuel Delivery Systems is the only U.S. manufacturer of mechanical fuel pumps. The precision-cast units are made with special heat treated rocker arms and case-hardened pins to ensure long-lasting performance.
